Why in the world would your son join the Army now?

ON SHEEP, WOLVES, AND SHEEPDOGS
By LTC(RET) Dave Grossman, RANGER, Ph.D.,author of "On Killing."
William J. Bennett - in a lecture to the United States Naval Academy November 24, 1997One Vietnam veteran, an old retired colonel, once said this to me: "Most of the people in our society are sheep. They are kind, gentle, productive creatures who can only hurt one another by accident." This is true. Remember, the murder rate is six per 100,000 per year, and the aggravated assault rate is four per 1,000 per year. What this means is that the vast majority of Americans are not inclined to hurt one another. We may well be in the most violent times in history, but violence is still remarkably rare. This is because most citizens are kind, decent people who are not capable of hurting each other, except by accident or under extreme provocation. They are sheep.I mean nothing negative by calling them sheep.
For now, though, they need warriors to protect them from the predators."Then there are the wolves," the old war veteran said, "and the wolves feed on the sheep without mercy." Do you believe there are wolves out there who will feed on the flock without mercy? You better believe it. There are evil men in this world and they are capable of evil deeds. The moment you forget that or pretend it is not so, you become a sheep. There is no safety in denial."Then there are sheepdogs," he went on, "and I'm a sheepdog. I live to protect the flock and confront the wolf."If you have no capacity for violence then you are a healthy productive citizen, a sheep. If you have a capacity for violence and no empathy for your fellow citizens, then you have defined an aggressive sociopath, a wolf. But what if you have a capacity for violence, and a deep love for your fellow citizens? What do you have then? A sheepdog, a warrior, someone who is walking the hero's path. Someone who can walk into the heart of darkness, into the universal human phobia, and walk out unscathed Let me expand on this old soldier's excellent model of the sheep, wolves, and sheepdogs. We know that the sheep live in denial, that is what makes them sheep. They do not want to believe that there is evil in the world.
The sheep generally do not like the sheepdog. He looks a lot like the wolf. He has fangs and the capacity for violence. The difference, though, is that the sheepdog must not, can not and will not ever harm the sheep. Any sheep dog who intentionally harms the lowliest little lamb will be punished and removed. The world cannot work any other way, at least not in a representative democracy or a republic such as ours.Still, the sheepdog disturbs the sheep. He is a constant reminder that there are wolves in the land. They would prefer that he didn't tell them where to go, or give them traffic tickets, or stand at the ready in our airports in camouflage fatigues holding an M-16. The sheep would much rather have the sheepdog cash in his fangs, spray paint himself white, and go, "Baa."Until the wolf shows up. Then the entire flock tries desperately to hide behind one lonely sheepdog.Understand that there is nothing morally superior about being a sheepdog; it is just what you choose to be. Also understand that a sheepdog is a funny critter: He is always sniffing around out on the perimeter, checking the breeze, barking at things that go bump in the night, and yearning for a righteous battle. That is, the young sheepdogs yearn for a righteous battle. The old sheepdogs are a little older and wiser, but they move to the sound of the guns when needed right along with the young ones.
Here is how the sheep and the sheepdog think differently. The sheep pretend the wolf will never come, but the sheepdog lives for that day. After the attacks on September 11, 2001, most of the sheep, that is, most citizens in America said, "Thank God I wasn't on one of those planes." The sheepdogs, the warriors, said, "Dear God, I wish I could have been on one of those planes. Maybe I could have made a difference." When you are truly transformed into awarrior and have truly invested yourself into warriorhood, you want to be there. You want to be able to make a difference. There is nothing morally superior about the sheepdog, the warrior, but he does have one real advantage. Only one. And that is that he is able to survive and thrive in an environment that destroys 98 percent of the population. There was research conducted a few years ago with individuals convicted of violent crimes. These cons were in prison for serious, predatory crimes of violence: assaults, murders and killing law enforcement officers. The vast majority said that they specifically targeted victims by body language: slumped walk, passive behavior and lack of awareness. They chose their victims like big cats do in Africa, when they select one out of the herd that is least able to protect itself. Some people may be destined to be sheep and others might be genetically primed to be wolves or sheepdogs. But I believe that most people can choose which one they want to be, and I'm proud to say that more and more Americans are choosing to become sheepdogs.
Seven months after the attack on September 11, 2001, Todd Beamer was honored in his hometown of Cranbury, New Jersey. Todd, as you recall, was the man on Flight 93 over Pennsylvania who called on his cell phone to alert an operator from United Airlines about the hijacking. When he learned of the other three passenger planes that had been used as weapons, Todd dropped his phone and uttered the words, "Let's roll," which authorities believe was a signal to the other passengers to confront the terrorist hijackers. In one hour, a transformation occurred among the passengers - athletes, business people and parents. -- from sheep to sheepdogs and together they fought the wolves, ultimately saving an unknown number of lives on the ground. There is no safety for honest men except by believing all possible evil of evil men. -

A missed call turned into a live call

As you may have read earlier, I missed a call from my boy at 0430 hrs this morning. You can only imagine the loss I felt as many of my readers are parents, spouses and perhaps some children and certainly family members of those serving this great Nation. Yes, that loss turned into absolute joy around 12:30 hrs when my cell rang and it was the same number that called at 0430 hrs this am. I was so thrilled I yelled "Alex, how are you son" and he stated "Dad I am good, just tired, dirty and I am sure I may stink" Go head!....lol. It was music to my ears and I ran out of my office and told my team members that I am stepping out to talk to my son. No questions asked I should mention.

Alex said everything is fine and he is doing well. He has received my care packages (not all) and loves it when they call his name when they do Mail call. I asked what Platoon he is with in Destined and he told me 3rd Platoon and when I asked what squad he said they weren't in a squad that they were on their own manning Mortar tubes about 1 hour away from a sight that I mail too. Many of you will understand where that is or close to.

He mentioned that the longest time they have gone without attacks against there position is 4 days and are on a streak of two days of no attacks. They do conduct patrols and make contact often with the enemy. I ask if they were in tents and he laughed and said I will see when I receive pictures from him. Please look forward to my next post that will explain what describes these men and why they do what they do for this country during a time of conflict and war. I am sure you will be impressed with what I post. I just want to get permission to post this speech from a friend and mother of one of our troops who shared it with me. In closing I want to say, I do this for my son but also for god and my country. Go Sky soldiers!

God Bless them all,

Missed Call

I was sound asleep when I heard my cell phone ringing. When I realized I was not dreaming I picked up the phone. I then realized I missed the call. I was then notified that I had a message. I was very disappointed after hearing the message that it was my boy Alex trying to contact me. I could hear the disappointment in his voice as he left a message. I guess at least I can say he sounded whole and of mind and soul. I sure do miss him and can not wait to great him at the airport one day. I have listened to his message 4 times already and I must say, even though I could hear the disappointment in his voice, it was still music to my ears.

care packages to my son

You know, when Alex first deployed I put together one grand care package that include enough to last a squad for a week. No, I do not mean it contained Ammo, Knives, Weapons of any kind. I sent GOODIES , real goodies like Sun Flower Seeds, Dried Fruits, Spoons, Hygiene products. Oh, the list does go on. I make sure to write a letter to my soldier to make sure he knows and understands that we all love and supports him in his mission for his country, Freedom for the
oppressed.

Destined Co. 2-503rd of the 173rd abn getting the job done.

I was able to pick up the above photos from a support website I belong to. To my surprise one of the pictures (second one down) are of two NCO's (SFC Levy and SFC Horval Reup at the Fortress) that my son looks up too as mentors. The other photo is of my sons mortar crew preparing to fire their gun tube in support of combat operations. Alex is the one leaning forward (Facing out of the pit) in the mortar pit sighting the tube.

The website contained over 45 photos and in looking at them it is hard to believe there is so much death in such a beautiful country. My son Alex is about ten miles from the Pakistani border. I still haven't heard from him yet but I am sure I will real soon.

A Dad's wish for Fathers Day

As a father of an amazingly brave young man, I can't help but to think of my boy running around the mountains of Afghanistan hunting and quit possibly being hunted on a weekend when we normally would be BBQing, drinking a few beers, laughing and wrestling as we have in the past. Don't get me wrong here, I will celebrate Fathers day with my wonderful daughter Michele who is Alex's older sister. She prefers to study to be a pediatrician while her brother is out saving the world and serving his country. Yes I will enjoy Sunday whether with my daughter even if it is only for few minutes on the phone or perhaps even see her if she gets back from Los Angles on time. She is currently in L.A. for work with the University conducting student orientations. I always have my anchor Amy, she supports me and both my children. Perhaps we will catch a movie and dinner. Regardless, The Sky Soldiers will be in my heart, she will understand me.

Deep down in my heart, I will be celebrating my very first Sky Soldiers Day. Yes, I dedicate this day (fathers day) for the men serving 173rd and there Fathers as well. As many of you are reading this, you can relate because you either have a son, husband, brother, loved one or a friend serving this fine unit. I will keep the two fathers that have already lost their son's in the first two weeks of being deployed and the fathers that are at the sides of the dozen or so men that have sustained injuries during these two attacks in my heart and prayers.

I only wish that we lose no more men in this battle for freedom in this country called Afghanistan. I wish that no father should ever go through what the families of our fallen soldiers must endure on a day dedicated to Fathers in past traditions. I only pray that these fine young men will once again spend a true fathers day with their dads again real soon. Too our Sky Soldiers!

My boy

Folks, I do not like posting losses of our boys with the 173rd but I feel I need to do so, or at least make a tribute to OUR boy's. They have played an important part in our way of life as well as the Afghan people that want a Democratic State as we wanted in 1776.
